Born in Shizuoka in 1996, Amela is not a tomato variety but a premium brand created through a unique cultivation method. By carefully limiting water supply, farmers produce fewer fruits per plant, but each tomato is packed with concentrated sweetness, acidity, and umami.
Amela’s hallmark is its firm flesh and perfectly balanced flavor. Delicious both raw and cooked, it elevates any dish with its rich taste. The name comes from the Shizuoka dialect meaning “sweet, isn’t it?” – a fitting description of its exceptional flavor.
Today, Amela is grown at seven farms across Japan, mainly in Shizuoka and Karuizawa, and production has also expanded to Spain.
